Overview
The transportation model is the main analysis tool used by the DTO and its agencies to assess the impacts of major land use and transportation developments proposed for the Greater Dublin Area over the next few years.

The model was recently used in the development of Transport 21 to assess the transportation infrastructural needs of the region over the next 10 years.

The model is multi modal - i.e. it includes details of travel patterns for all the main modes of travel - including by car, bus, rail, walking and cycling.

It has been recently updated to include travel to work and school data from the 2002 Census of population.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The main drivers of travel demand are urban development and economic growth. The DTO consults with all local authorities within the region to ascertain where development will take place.

In addition to this the analysis process needs to account for the infrastructure that will be provided to cater for the travel demand generated by these developments.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A major strength of the model is its ability to test transportation and land use scenarios and carry out "what if" type analysis.

The model has been used to help predict, for example, the traffic impacts of introducing LUAS, building the Dublin Port Tunnel and completing the C-Ring motorway. Hence, the model has been used as the principal design and evaluation tool for these and all of the major roads and public transport proposal currently being planned and implemented in Dublin.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
While the model has been used mainly by the DTO and its agencies, private sector developers have also made extensive use of it to provide traffic impact assessments for major proposed residential, retail and industrial developments. The DTO provides a modelling service to its own agencies and to the private sector through its commercial modelling unit.
The unit's small team of modellers undertake modelling analysis on a commercial basis using the DTO model.
