.:: Green-Schools Travel – DTO Safer Routes to School ::.

Over the past fifteen years the number of Irish children being driven to school has increased significantly and over the same period the number of Irish children walking and cycling to school has dropped dramatically.

The number of primary school children being driven to school has increased from 32% in 1997 to 50% in 2002 and from 15% to 30% for secondary school children.

As a response to this trend, the DTO developed a pilot scheme called Safer Routes to School. The pilot scheme ran over five years, from 2000 to 2005 and involved twelve schools in six areas across the Greater Dublin Area. ../more
